I've wondered about this phrase for a long time. Today while reading "Christianity for the Rest of Us" by Diana Butler Bass, I found a definition that makes sense. She writes, "Since colonial days, American faith has often bounced between the poles of ecstasy, usually termed 'spirituality,' and order, typically tagged as 'religious.'"
I realized that I want a church that is both spiritual and religious. I want to know that our worship is indeed linked to the ministry of the early church, that it recalls and symbolizes the work and worship of Jesus. I want that "religion." But I also want, and at times long for, the touch of the ecstatic. I love those moments in worship when I lose myself in the love of God. (Although sometimes it causes me to lose my place in the Eucharistic prayer.)
I hope and pray that we can have both.
